David was born on 1 February 1309, the son of David of Strathbogie, earl of Atholl (d.1326) and Joan Comyn, daughter of the John Comyn of Badenoch killed by Robert I in 1306. Raised in exile following his father’s forfeiture in 1314, David returned to Scotland to Scotland to attempt to recover his paternal and maternal inheritance in 1332 as part of Edward Balliol’s expeditionary force. He was married to Katherine Beaumont, the daughter of another ‘Disinherited’ lord, Henry Beaumont, claimant to the earldom of Buchan. After a brief period reconciled to the Bruce regime David returned to Balliol allegiance and was killed in battle with pro-Bruce lords at Culblean in Aberdeenshire on 30 November 1336. He left one son, David.
