Watt and Shead, Heads, 150: Matthew was cellarer of Melrose when he was elected abbot of Melrose on 15 April 1246. He was blessed by the bishop of Glasgow at Melrose on 17 May 1246. It is said that the father-abbot of Rievaulx deposed him in absentia in 1261, though it was also reported that he resigned because of infirmity at Melrose on 24 July 1261.
