Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 201-02: Nicholas was born Giovanni Gaetani Orsini at Rome around 1216 to Matteo Rosso, a senator and member of the Orsini family, and his wife, Perna Gaetana, of the noble house of the Gaetani. He was created cardinal-deacon of S. Niccolò in Carcere Tulliano. He was elected pope on 25 November 1277, at Viterbo; after a stroke, he died on 22 August 1280 at Soriano, near Viterbo. He is buried in the chapel of St Nicholas in St Peter's.
