Norrin, son of Norman

Biography: Norin, or Norman, was son of Norman, son of Malcolm, constable of Inverurie. Norman the younger confirmed the church of Leslie to Lindores Abbey in 1243, by which year his father was dead. This Norman, who used the style 'Norman of Leslie, son of Norman the constable', is the first on record to use the surname Leslie. This Norman seems to have sometimes also been called 'Norin'. Isabella Bruce, one of the heirs of Earl John of Huntingdon, allowed the king to grant the lands of Leslie that Norin son of Norman the constable had held as their tenant, to Norin in free forest in 1248. Norin son of Norman had appeared as a witness to a charter of Earl Fergus of Buchan as early as 1204×14. He was also known as 'Sir Norman of Leslie'. Norman or Norin had a brother named John. A contemporary, Sir Andrew of Leslie, was possibly another brother or, perhaps more likely, a cousin. (MHH)
