John Mansel, provost of Beverley Minster

Biography
John was an advisor to Henry III of England; in 1258 he was placed in Norham castle by Henry, along with Alan Durward, in opposition to Alexander III. He fled to France in 1263 to escape the barons who opposed the English king, and died there in 1265. Despite his great wealth and support of the king, according to the Chronicle of Melrose he died in pain and poverty whilst in exile. (Chron. Mel.)
