Description
Robert, bishop of St Andrews, announces that, with licence of King David, he has erected (statuisse) a burgh at St Andrews (FIF), and, with king's consent and firm peace, has made Mainard the Fleming provost, and to Mainard, for his service shown to bishop and his men, has granted three tofts in burgh, free and quit of all custom for 16d., that is, for each virgate of land 4d., because it was he who began to build and stock the burgh; no one is to do him an injury. Mainard was leading burgess in Berwick whom alms mentioned above [i.e. founding of burgh] bestowed in alms on St Andrew and bishop.
