- Description
- King Alexander II has founded a burgh beside his new castle at Dumbarton, and grants to burgh and his burgesses dwelling there all liberties and free customs which his burgesses of Edinburgh have. He has settled (assedi) that said burgh may have a market every Wednesday, and that burgesses coming to settle in burgh shall be 'kirset' (exempt) for five years from Pentecost 1221, and that they shall be quit of toll and all custom through his land. He prohibits anyone in his realm from demanding toll or custom, on his forfeiture. He further grants his firm peace for all those who settle or trade in the burgh, saving rights of the burgh.
