In 1245 an agreement was formed between Newbattle Abbey and Holyrood Abbey, whereby the abbots and convent of Newbattle demitted at feuferme to Holyrood their salt-pans of the Carse in Callander (STL), which they hold at feuferme from Walter Olifard and from Sir David Comyn, with all easements, liberties and rights pertaining to the salt-pans, to be held in perpetuity for an annual payment of 2½ marks for the salt-pan held of Walter Olifard, and a payment of 4 chalders of salt from the Carse for the salt-pan held of Sir David Comyn. If anyone is evicted by law from the salt-pans, or one of them, Holyrood Abbey shall be free from payment. The abbot and convent of Newbattle shall not acquire title to remaining lands, salt-pans and possessions in the Carse by renting or selling them and Holyrood Abbey bound themselves similarly.
