Ranulf de Soules, butler of the king of Scots, has granted and given and by this his charter established to Newbattle Abbey, for the soul of his lord King David, and of Earl Henry his son, and for the soul of King Malcolm, and for the welfare of the soul of his lord King William, and of himself, in perpetual alms, one ploughgate of land in Gilmerton (MLO) from his demesne, as Geoffrey de Malevin and other responsible men measured it, free and quit from all services and assises and gelds and from all secular exaction.
