Description
Hugh Ridel, lord of Cranstoun, by the consideration of divine love, and for the salvation of the souls of his ancestors and successors, has given, granted and by this his present charter established to Kelso Abbey, in free, pure and perpetual alms, the villa and tenement of Eastercranston, which is called Preston or 'Prestonton' (ELO), with its correct bounds and pertinents, to be had and held, just as any alms land in the kingdom of Scotland is held and possessed. And that the monks and their successors may be free to dispose of and to construct their commodities in the land and tenement as they deem necessary, according to their will, without any forinsec and intersec service. Additionally, they are to be free from all customs, actions and secular burdens; however, Hugh reserves to him and his heirs a render twenty shillings of good silver annually, which abbot and convent owed to him and his heirs for all the multure which they were able to extract from the land, at two times of the year, viz. one half at the feast of Pentecost and the other half at the feast of St. Martin in winter. Hugh also reserves the fact that the abbot and convent are not licensed to build a mill on the River Tyne. Hugh promises to warrant the donation.
