In AD 1296, the 9th indiction, the lord king of England being present at Lumphanan; there came there to his faith and will the lord John Melville, knight, on the 21st day of the month of July; there being present the lords Walter de Beauchamp, John Tregotz, Thomas of Bicknor, and John Merk, knights, with many others both knights and men at arms, and the Notary; and he annulled the alliances, contracts, agreements, and pacts that were at any time entered into with the king of the French against the king of England in his name; and having taken the holy gospels and kissed them, he performed fealty to the lord king of England; and upon his fealty performed in this way, he made his letters patent, sealed with his pendant seal.
