In AD 1296, the 9th indiction, 27th day of July, at [Elgin in Moray], in the presence of the witnesses last written above, and the Notary, with many others, the noble lord Alexander, earl of Menteith, with the lords Thomas de Soules, John Wishart, Gervase of Rait, Alexander of Argyll, Alexander Comyn, and Nicholas de Soules, knights; coming to the faith and will of the lord king of England; annulled the alliances, contracts, agreements, and pacts that were at any time entered into with the king of the French against the king of England in their name; and having taken the holy gospels and kissed them, they performed fealty to the lord king of England; and upon their fealty performed in this way, they made their letters patent, sealed with their pendant seals.
