- Description
- In the year 1298, Thomas, abbot of Scone, states that the monastery of Scone [was] violently destroyed by the army of the king of England, and [was] also ruined and wrecked, as much in the ceilings of the church, the refectory, dormitory, cloisters, vaults, hostiis, windows, altars, [and] chests, as in the ceremonial objects and scrineis. Thomas states that evidence, [which was] exhibited and revealed in his presence to [Robert of Garvald], the apostolic notary, was also unmistakable that the chests in which the charters and muniments of David [I], Malcolm [IV], William [I], Alexander [II] and Alexander [III], the late kings of Scotland, as well as [the charters] of the bishops of St Andrews, Dunkeld, Aberdeen, Caithness, and indeed, [the charters] of the abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights, and other faithful, were destroyed and ruined which related to the conveyances of churches, lands, possessions, feus, alms, secular [grants], permutations, transactions, [and] agreements, that were carried out in various ways on behalf of the same monastery. And additionally, the seals of the same charters and muniments [were] totally broken, removed and shredded.
