His bachelor, Robert de Tilliol, keeper of Lochmaben writes to his lord, the king of England making known that on Thursday 7 September, Sir John de Soules, Sir Ingram de Umfraville and others under them came to him at Lochmaben and burnt the town and assailed the peel; and then left and went to lodge near Annan and burnt the country round about. The next day they returned and assailed them again, at which assault Sir David of Brechin and Sir John de Vaux were injured, and many others of their men were killed and wounded. They then went to lodge near Dalswinton and are going towards Nithsdale and Galloway. One of Robert’s companions, Sir William de Heriz was taken at a sally and a man of Wintain was killed.
